When Trinity came downstairs in her blue check shirt, Rafael was already in the kitchen, frying bacon.

‘Hey, sleep well?’ he asked her.

She nodded, and sat down at the table.

‘Dream?’

‘Yes.’

‘Care for a coffee? You bought some soy milk, didn’t you?’

‘Yes. Yes, please.’

He poured her a mug of coffee, dropped a spoon in it, and brought it over. ‘Was it the right kind of dream? Like – did you find yourself a friend?’

She smiled tightly and her eyes filled with tears. ‘Yes. I found a friend. And I can’t tell you how happy I am. It’s my mother. She died three years ago, but now I have her back again. I can feel that she’s with me, even now. It’s like she’s sitting right here next to me.’

Rafael went back to his frying pan. ‘That’s amazing. Your mother? I never heard of that before. I mean, usually it’s some total stranger and all they want is the chance to come back out into the world where people are awake.’

‘They’re always dead people?’

‘Mostly. Sometimes people in comas, you know? People who aren’t going to wake up for years, or maybe never.’

‘It’s such a good feeling. But do you think it’s going to work? Do you think she’s going to be able to make anybody think that I look like somebody else?’

‘You saw what my grandpa did with his beer glass. But you could always try it out, if you want to. You can try it out on me, but let me finish frying these rashers. I don’t want to set fire to the place.’

Once he had scraped the bacon onto a plate and put it in the oven to keep warm, Rafael stood by the window and said, ‘Okay. I’m all yours.’

Trinity had no idea how this dream disguise was supposed to work, but she closed her eyes and she could sense her mother’s presence as strongly as if she were actually there, beside her.

I want Rafael to see me differently, she told her mother, inside her mind. I want him to see me with short blonde hair and looking much older, maybe about forty, with a pointy nose and a pointy chin and wearing a chunky green sweater.

She visualised the woman that she wanted Rafael to see, as vividly as if she actually knew her. It wasn’t difficult, because she closely resembled her math teacher from John R. Wooden High School, Ms Novak, and her mother had known Ms Novak too.

She recited the words that Teodoro had taught her, and when she had repeated them five times she hummed and whispered ‘anyapakh’.

At first she felt nothing, but then she had a sliding sensation inside her mind, as if her head had been covered in a black cloth hood and somebody had drawn it off. She opened her eyes and saw that Rafael was staring at her as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

‘Well?’ she said, and she reached up and tugged at her hair. It was still long, and it was still brunette.
